Deepfake technology is an open access (I.e publicly available) AI editing tool that uses artificial intelligence to create realistic but fake audio, video, or image content by manipulating the appearance and voice of people, often making it difficult to distinguish from real footage. Its real-world applications have ranged from comical (as in the impersonation of President Obama by director Jordan Peele in a skit in 2018) to nefarious (as in the case of corporate fraud involving the defrauding of a UK company in 2019 through impersonation of the CEO's voice) etc.
